No, please, don't be "trendy"
Be stylish.
And also dress appropriate for your age. There is nothing more absurd that seeing a person that is 50, for example, dress like a teenager. You do not want to risk looking like a complete poser.
Be yourself, and incorporate some elegance and timeless class into your wardrobe. Also go shopping and ask for some younger "hip" looking clerks to help you with casual attire. They'll be happy to.
The clothes are a start. But don't give up on being classic. I am only 33 and constantly listen to classic rock and REFUSE to get a Myspace page. I also detest the the majority of the crap on the radio now. I will never succomb to being a follower, and that is the most respectable style now with people that I think are truly "in". And people respect me for my being genuine.
Read some cool magazines and look at the styles. Other things you could do is go to yoga, go to a gym, hang out at a few cool coffe joints and just read or take your laptop. Get into Youtube and you can see what all kinds of creatives are doing. People don't do that to be trendy, it's just fun.
And a MUST. Suscribe to "The Onion". It is a parody of news events, it has venue listings and all kinds of music and film reviews. (you should get into indie films). There are sooo many people that read this. I just love it and that is a cool accessory. Get into that and it will strike up conversations sometimes.

Your wanting to be mainstream or cutting edge but you failed to mention in what area...
this is posted in society & culture but still i dont quite get in what area of your life your wanting to "update"
If your asking about fashion advice, i suggest you start looking at magazines for trends and also what people are wearing.
If your looking for the In thing to do, thats going to vary from town to town.
If your already into some hobby and your wanting to get Trendy with that hobbie... get the hobbies magazine and get the coolest stuff you can find.
Lucky for you if you wait long enough, you will be back in style... its the way things work.
My recomendation, go do the things you want to do and SLOWLY upgrade each time you see something you like, since this advice works in every way i can think of.
You wont be trendy right away, but if you keep updating, you will be.

Don't be trendy. Trends are for people who are afraid to be themselves. Trendyness basicly means you do whatever else everyone else does. I guess if you want to follow the other sheep off the cliff you can but why not just have fun being yourself?

Who cares? It doesn't make you any less of a person if you're 'outdated', as you say.
But if you want to get trendy, then ask around.

just be happy with yourself. you can still live happily. okay assuming you want to be trendy in fashion, read lots and lots of fashion and style magazines and get ideas from there. and go shopping everyday! you'll be trendy in no time.

Get some trendy magazines and look at the pictures and what they are talking about. But really, being yourself is timeless. :-)

Watch a lot of TV and copy the clothes and hairstyles of the people you see.
Or use your own personality to be a trend-setter instead of a trend follower.
