umm, good question. I think one can tell if they are using their intellect because of the stress on the brain, it's not using the brain passively.

You are intellectually engaged when you are mentally occupied for a moment because you're working on something on which you can't take you mind off. Like doing this Q&A thing. Intellectually engaging is something that stimulates your thought and makes you pause for a while to think, and even makes you pull a chair so you can sit and ponder on it. What do I find intellectually engaging? A few people that I talk to, the ideas they share and the conversation we had, some articles in the magazines, just about anything that sounds new and fascinates me.

When something is interesting and challenges your mind to think and learn new things then it is intellectually engaging.

The older I get the less I find to intellectually engage me.

It means that all your thought processes are on that subject, problem or project at that time. Many times we are thinking of several different things at once-something that can cause you to think only of it at the moment is intellectually engaging.
This often happens to me when I read, or with a challenging project. I have always loved books and am somewhat of a perfectionist.
