I've heard the argument that since criminals will have guns "no matter what" private citizens need guns to protect their families. Studies and statistics show that a gun in the house is much more likely to kill a friend or family member than to be used on an intruder. So what is it that makes them so appealing?

Don't more guns equal more shooting? Pointing a gun at a criminal seems like it would make them more likely to react violently, if only in self-defense. Easy accessability means that there are more casual criminals and spontaneous shootings.

Personally I'm not as worried about hardened criminals as I am about being shot by someone who wields a gun like a toy. It's a highly efficient instrument of death that because of our current laws can be picked up by any disgruntled high school outcast or paranoid trigger-happy neurotic. Aren't there other ways to keep your family safe? Are they really that unsafe to begin with? Maybe I just haven't lived in a bad enough neighborhood.

A gun is the best way to protect your family: IF you have a brain. That means you need to have a trigger lock or a gun safe and keep the safeties on and educate yourself and your family about gun safety and keep the gun out of children's reach and not let them know the combination to the safe or know where the trigger lock key is. Also you shouldn't leave ammunition lying around, it is just as dangerous as a gun. The problem is that too many adults are too stupid to handle owning a gun. I may sound cold hearted but in that case I hope that they don't get to reproduce and that their kids do shoot each other. Less idiots is a better world for me. The cops can take forever to get to your house anyway. I personally own guns not necessarily because I think I'll get in a shootout with criminals desperate for my pocket change or whatever is in my house, but because target shooting with guns can be a fun hobby if practiced safely at a range. People break their necks in football, a meteor can fall on you when you leave your house, there is risk in everything, but I still to live life in an enjoyable way.(and remember SAFE you idiots! SAFE!)

wow laguna lot of good answers don't you think?
here is one more while some one is breaking in to your house with your little girl asleep in the next room you call the cops and see who gets in first the crooks or the cops?
the only thing the cops are good for is writing out the report and telling you that they will look into it, but we probably wont find your stuff.
Remember Guns don't kill people, people kill people, a gun is just a tool, people are stabbed with knives every day, hit by cars, buses and trains, by the time the cops get there, they're there to write the report.
People need to protect them selves and thier family and gun ownership and educatons is the best way to protect them selves. You can't do any thing about the kids who take guns from others and shoot up a school campus except to educate your children to be good to other while in school, to help those who may be in need of help, don't be a punk or bully, these are the kids that indirectly or directly cause troubled kids to pick up guns and shoot every one in school because the punks and bullys are hiding for fear of being shot.
EDUCATION is the key to every thing....cya....

Surely the question should be "Why do so many people believe that the only way to get money is to steal from others rather than working for it?"

The problem with your guns more likely to kill a household member statistic is that it ignores all those who use guns to commit suicide because it's easier to suicide with a gun. Fact is, is that (non-gang) communities with high rates of gun ownership have lower crime rates. There also are no statistics on how many people are saved by guns every year; how many carjackings are prevented because someone in the vehicle was armed? I bet there are no statistics on that.

More families are injured because some guy who thinks he's Gary Cooper at High Noon hears a noise, grabs his gun, puts on his Gucci robe and tries to surprise the intruders. The intruders, usually some young kid strung out on drugs looking for a few bucks, is strapped, freaks out and starts shooting. The fact is, most people who want to protect their families with firearms in the house would not know how to react in that kind of situation without getting their buns shot off. You see, that young kid is NOT the common enemy. And the guy in the Gucci robe is not the malitia.

You can look it up.

The study you quote is the Kellermann study and it has been debunked on many occasions. One major problem is that his study group was more likely to be doing drugs and have criminal records than the general population. Another problem is the definition of "friends and family members", which includes the drug supplier who gets ripped off by his dealer and the abusive husband who get shot by his estranged wife after she has fled and he tracks her down and attacks her.

Another finding in the same study shows that the risk of death to a family member, is that you put your family at a greater risk by living in a rented home instead of an owned home.

Guns in the hands of responsible owners kill no one. I have owned guns for 32 years, and have carried one for the last 16 years, and there has never been an accidental shooting in my home, nor has anyone i know had an accidental shooting. However, the FBI statistics on lower crime rates in cities with concealed carry are compelling.

More people die from drownings in backyard pools than by guns. Yet, it's rare that a gun actually makes one 'safer.'

The safest thing you can do is understand the statistics around you.

With gun ownership comes responsibility. However, creating "gunfree" zones only enables criminals to catch their law abiding victims without protection. I'm all for guns, and the responsible use of them.
