My psychiatrist and psychologist would tell you that it would depend on the disorder. There are forms of depression that can be cured and there are forms of depression that are chronic. I'm not sure that you ever get over being a schizophrenic or some of the other psychiatric disorders. I know that you can over come being psychotic as I have. So I think that it depends on which disorder you're dealing with.

depends on many factors. motivation, an environment that promotes recovery, physical damage (brain damage), the type of disorder, the severity, and so on. depression for example eventually goes away but can take months or years to do so. antisocial personality disorder and schizophrenia however are more difficult to treat and have little success. generally these disorders you have to live with and try to manage, however they do subside as one gets older. the more biological the disorder the more one will have to manage rather than be cured, as i see it. same thing goes for dementia and alzheimer's patients.
overall though, i believe the person will always have the disorder just at some manageable level.

Some psychological disorders in our society is not a disorder in another social structure. In many cases one have to ask oneself if it might be that our society is less tolerant and declare it as a psychological disorder or psychosocial disorder, but is it really the case.

psycological disorders are not diseases. one can lead a normal life with these disorders. it cannot be wiped out from one's mind.but it can be kept under control by counselling. these disorders are mostly because of child brought up without parental care, without true friends, etc. every human beings is with one or the other disorder and nobody is an exception. the degree of intensity varies. in serious cases, it needs tremendous love and care from their close friends and relatives to overcome and no other way.
