people called josh gibson the babe ruth of the ***** leagues, i call babe, the josh gibson of the major leagues. he is estimated to have hit over 800 homers in the ***** leagues. and he could do that even drunker than babe was.
and the DH didn't come along until the 70's man. forget AL and NL, pitchers can hit in this question.

I would take

1B Gehrig for sure
2B..Joe Morgan was a far better offensive force in his time than Hornsby was in his....Hornsby/Collins vie for the 2/3 slot
SS Banks is very good..and for those few years at his peak in the late 50's he might have been the most dominant player ever...for that 2-4 years only, but Honus Wagner is better for longer
3B....Brett is 2.....Schmidt is 1
RF...Given Ruth as an SP, AAron is the guy
CF Mantle...Mays had a better career..but when Mantle was Mantle...at his peak of 1955-1964 I think he was better
LF...hmmmmmmm...Bonds, Williams or Musial....maybe Bonds..but I'd take Stan the Man as my personal wild card
C....Piazza...as good as Gibson was, and we can't say for sure...because he never tested his skill outside the ***** leagues..and if we include the ***** leagues...there are guys who may be better than some of the guys we got..Oscar Charleston would be a top 3 of'er..Piazza is the best offensive catcher by a mile over any MLB player...If you wanted the best catcher (offense/defense/baserunnung)...I might be talked into Gibson...but as a hitter...go with Piazza

Some personal notes

Hornsby...look at how many times he was traded, who he was traded for, and how the teams that traded him away all got better, look at some of the stats his teammates got in the same park, the stats of the ST Louis Brown hitters using the same park and compare them to Hornsby...there are several years you are not convinced Rogers was even the best hitter on his team...or in his city. He is a legitimately great hitter...but a real close examination of his career in context..leaves you a little dry...

If I had the #1 pick in an all-time draft of real players for a real game...all aspects of a players game/ability/life/personality/clubhouse demeanor are counted in a player's skill set...I'd pick Wagner..

Before Banks....no one ever won an MVP 2 years in a row, and no one won it for bad teams...Banks won it for bad teams twice...and in a row...imagine how dominant a player he must have been in the late 50's to pull that off....

Great question...

With the Babe pitching, it better be in the National League, otherwise he HAS to be in the outfield

I'd take out Aaron and Bonds and replace them with two of the following: Ted Willams, Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle.

George Brett does not belong there. Probably Arod, unless you put Arod at SS and put Mike Schmidt at 3B.

Josh Gibson does not belong there either. The greatest offensive catcher is either Johnny Bench or Mike Piazza.

Here's my lineup:

1B Lou Gehrig
2B Rogers Hornsby
3B Mike Schmidt
SS Alex Rodriguez
RF Ted Willams
CF Willie Mays
LF Mickey Mantle
C Johnny Bench
P/DH Babe Ruth
