Not specifically Bread - but other really obscure items - yes.

Or pull out a stack of coupons the thickness of a New York phone book...

Or try to pay in foreign currency.

Or the strangest - a guy who tried to trade oatmeal for his groceries - odd.

Not others, but I know that I do that when I go shopping at grocery stores. I sometimes write checks even for a couple of items or a single item. I do it mainly to get a little cash back. I also fill out part of the check before I leave, so it's faster at the check out line.
