~Although Martha Washington was probably the model for the likeness depicted on the 1792 half disme (now, dime), Abe Lincoln was the first real person, living or dead, to be honored on a coin. Through no small effort by Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln came out on the 'wheatie' penny in 1909, commemorating the centennial of his birth. Currency is a different story, with all manner of folks appearing on bills prior to the Lincoln penny.
