First they need to go to the Playoffs then think about a Championship. Looking at the Hawks Roster. They have a young but talented team. Joe Johnson is an all-star caliber player. Josh Smith a 6"9' forward has athleticism & has a fundamentally sound defensive game (as of the moment he at least leads his team 3.8 blocks per game). There are 3 young talents that could give Atlanta a chance in 3 years Josh Childress, Marvin Williams & Al Horford. What they need i think is a veteran point guard (e.g. Mike Bibby) & a first rounder which plays the Center position. If they do this coupled with the development of the present crop of players they are at least a competitive team in the playoffs

The Atlanta Hawks need a couple of things to be contenders. First they need an actual PG. Without that, this team isn't moving anywhere. Second, they need Josh Smith to put in a full effort night in and night out and play hard. Finally they need some more bench depth. Needless to say they still have a ways to go and the ownership problems aren't a good sign but they do have a great set of sf/sg on their team they can build around.

Everyone is saying that they need a PG to take them to the next level. I agree that a PG will definitely help bring this young athletic team to the playoffs, but this only reminds me of the blunder and the huge mistake of this team during the 2005 draft. For those who don't know, here's a reminder:
1) Bucks - Andrew Bogut
2) Hawks - Marvin Williams???
3) Jazz - DERON WILLIAMS!?!?
4) Hornets - CHRIS PAUL!?!?
5) Bobcats - Raymond Felton
WOW. They passed on two and possibly three of today's growing NBA stars!!! Imagine what could have been. Even Felton would have got the job done as he is doing his thing in Charlotte. So in conclusion, the short term solution would be a PG, but for the long term . . . GET NEW MANAGEMENT.

The most critical thing the Hawks need is sane people in the front office. The ownership team is in disarray right now. Nobody seems to get along and the head guy keeps vetoing possible trades that could really help the team. It just goes to show winning starts at the top of an organization.

The Hawks are a good team right now but what they need is a true star. Josh Smith can not carry the hawks to a championship.

i was gonna ask the same question about the Knicks. as for the Hawks, they need a better coach, a true point guard & a front line worth talking about. they suck. and just like the Knicks, you won't see them anywhere near the NBA Finals for at least a decade.

I would say a distributing point guard (Nash, Kidd), a defensive and rebounding centre (Camby, Dalembert) and a solid coach that can establish a proper system (Don Nelson).
Josh Smith is one of my favourite players. Hopefully they wont trade him.

First off, they need a MIRACLE! After that a true PG, better front office staff, and another coach.
