How do different molecules absourb light?

I need help answering this question for my biology class. It invloves photosynthesis.

If the energy of the photon matches with the energy of the outer electrons of the compound then the electrons take up the energy of the photon and go to the higher orbit( get into the excited state).
This is a general principle of photochemistry.
