Ridiculous clothes from top fashion designers?

I was just watching a fashion show recap on tv and it was from Alexander Mcqueen and there were some really strange clothes that you would never really wear anywhere. Why do designers make clothes like this anyways?

Designers create clothing as art, and use the runway to show their creations. These designs are not generally for sale, although a few people such as Chloe Sevigny have the guts to wear high concept clothing to red carpet events.
