Russia would launch about 3,000 missles at our military bases, and some say we can survive if we got into an underground shelter with a half foot of earth over the top and stay in there for a month and a half. The radiation would dissipate to levels that were survivable.

A bit sketchy, but you have it basically right.

People who knew better exaggerated the effects of nuclear war to scare the bejeezus out of everyone so they would surrender rather than use the nukes.

Some of the missiles will reach their targets, some will get shot down. I'd say enough people would survive.

Still, it won't be good for anyone. US will fire its missiles at Russia. I think there enough nukes to wipe out all mammals :)

Don't worry.

U.S. miltary got sufficient power to destroy all Russian nuke before they would get to U.S.
