My mentors name is Lois. She has been a dear friend and like a mother for years, she modeled for me how to be an effective person without having to be pushy. She has taught me how to accept people as they are, The pressure this takes off a person is amazing. I learned from her that I am responsible for my own happiness, and that is by choosing how to view the good or the bad, see the larger picture.
My friend is still doing that for me as she has had a massive stroke, and still has her smile and humor. No matter how confused she gets she stays true to what she has modeled in her attitude towards life. She is quite a bit older than me so the last lesson she will be teaching me-- and this is the biggie-- is how to die with dignity. She is an amazing person and has mentored many younger people through out her life. Not formally, but because we were drawn to her incredible strength of character and warmth.
The impact that this lady has left on me will always be there imprinted in my heart and mind.

My mother in law was my mentor. She was born and raised on an isolated farm in the Appalachian mountains. Her father left the family and her mother was left alone with three children. Shortly after that her mother had a leg amputated. This was long before the days of welfare or any other government help. Here was a one-legged woman with three young children. All they had was the food the children could raise in the garden. My mother in law once reflected on the month that they had nothing to eat but carrots and wistfully said, "It wouldn't have been so bad if we'd had some salt." Oh my!
I married as a teenager in Eastern Kentucky. I joke that my life is much like Loretta Lynn's, except that I have no talent and have remained poor and obscure. :-) My mother in law taught me much about raising my own food, preserving it, and in general how to live on very little. She helped me learn to be independent and to think for myself. Compared to her life, I've never felt that I was poor or indulged in self-pity.

I would say my mentor would have to be my mom (i know, so typical!) but i have to give her credit for me being able to have the open mind i have today. She was 15 when she had me but was still able to teach me to be open minded and to remember that there is a whole world beyond the neighborhood we lived in. She taught me to think outside the box. It's because of her that when i was in high school instead of being worried about being popular and clothes i was thinking about politics and philosophy and why our country is the way it is. My life could've been way more negative because i grew up in a bad neighborhood. I could've easily been sucked into the drugs and violence that was in our neighborhood. And if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be in college right now. I love her so much. :tear:

Wow... I haven't really ever given this any thought. I have to honestly say that for most of my life, I have been my own mentor... I have relied on my ability to reason to guide me.
Now, I rely on my children as well as myself for this.
And, yes, I have been deeply affected by my children in this way.

my mom. my father left her to raise 5 kids under the age of 6 (early 60's when divorce was not common). she held her head up, rode the bus to work every day, did without things and never complained. not many of my friends knew we were poor because she taught us dignity, manners, respect. she also taught us all to stand on our own two feet and always be able to support yourselves. now my job is to make sure she lives in happiness the rest of her life.
