Set yourself up a budget. You should start with putting half of your paycheck into a savings account. Call it your college fund or your new car fund or your big trip fund.

For a two week period, write down everything you spend money on. From that you should be able to set up categories for your needs -- clothing, school supplies, transportation, entertainment, etc. Then allocate your income to those categories.

Then don't carry extra money and you won't be able to spend it.

I transfer or save my money in a bank account I have no immediate access to. If it I have an ATM for it I do not bring it with me. I also project how much money I will have extra after paying my basic needs and invest that in stocks/funds as soon as I get the money so I cannot take them out immediately. I leave some though for minor emergencies. Investing does not show the money in your cash balance so it kinda gives you the perception that you only have so much. I also scheduled my shopping to once every quarter. When that happens though it is kinda major but I feel more contented because it would seem you spent a lot even when you only spent $500 unlike spending the same amount of money on a weekly basis for 3 months.

Dave Ramsey http://www.daveramsey.com/ and other similar financial experts endorse spending cash, and using an enveolope system.

Get envelopes, and mark on them the different areas you want to budget (Food, Entertainment, Savings, etc.) and decide how much you want to spend on these. Put that much money into each envelope. When the money in the envelope is gone, it's gone. Avoid (though you cannot always) "borrowing" from one envelope to pay for something that should come out of the other. Now perhaps your initial budget was off, so you may need to adjust if you find you haven't alotted enough in some catagory.

Say you want to eat at a resturant, and you look in that envelope and you see there's only say $20 left. You might say to yourself "I would enjoy this now, but I'd really rather save this and use it on Friday", etc. When it is laid out like that, it's easier to make choices about where your money goes.

Dave Ramsey's course, "Financial Peace University" is well worth attending, especially by somebody like you who is young and can start applying these sound financial practices from the get-go. Just my $.02 worth.

Please keep spending your money! Consumers like you drive the economy. Who cares if some rich guy ends up with your hard earned cash. You probably don't deserve to keep it anyways. Also, every time you waste your money, you are giving retail employees more job security. In fact, you should get heavily into debt. Then you can become a money slave to the shareholders of credit card companies. Yay!

Put the majority of your money in a savings account, as soon as you get it....
Keep out enough to get through, till your next payday...
Then only spend that amount.
If you don't have it "in your pocket" it's much easier to resist...
