Eyes are checked if capable of seeing things from afar to avoid accidents.

I'm not from AL, but I just got my driver's license and when I took the vision test, I looked into the machine & it was just a simple eye chart (the one with lines of random letters). They asked me to read just the top lines.

In California there are signs hanging from the ceilings, not machines. If you are sharp, you can memorize them while you wait your turn.

But they will ask you to read it with both eyes open, then one eye at a time.

If you have glasses you are allowed to use them, in fact you will be required to use them.
