Yes alot has changed. It used to be a reactive type of job. Crime happened, police came. Nowadays stats are kept, as to where and when crime is likely to happen, and patrol is sectored out appropriately. Also a new concept of community oriented policing came into effect. Police changed from not interacting with the public, to realizing that they are a great asset in helping combat crime. Now it is encouraged for officers to stop into their businesses, and have good relations with employees. They often can pass along vital information that the police otherwise would not know. Also by getting familiar with busineses they are more able to tell if something is wrong inside. The ever advancing computer technologies, help the job also. Poice receive calls faster, and have more relavent information about the incident they are responding to. Another aspect that has changed is that states are now holding crime information and suspects in a central computer, that all agencies in that state can access. Information sharing is very important in this job. But I think the most important thing is what I mentioned earlier. Interacting with your community is worth it's weight in gold. It allows the community to feel involved, and they get to see that officers are not the evil people once thought. They get to see their tax money at work, and I have had so many people confide information to me because they trust me, and have the feeling that they think I'm a cool guy, and I will actually work to resolve their problems. There is actualy many many more aspects that have changed, but I also hate long drawn out answers, so I'll cut myself off here.
