I love to visit art galleries and museums and immerse myself in the local culture of a region, does anyone know of some outstanding places to visit within Queensland?

In Brisbane, they have just opened a brand new modern building housing the State Library and Art Gallery; just next to it is the Queensland Museum, which is right near the Cultural Centre - home of performing Arts in Queensland. All of which is adjacent to Southbank, previously the site of World Expo 88, but which has seen a complete transformation.

As you will see on the Art Gallery site, there is a Warhol exhibition until March 2008...it's generating a lot of interest locally.

The Powerhouse (an old powerhouse - who'da thought!) is now a modern art space and performance venue for slightly different artists and genres. It is in New Farm which is 5-10 minutes by cab from the CBD.

Between the CBD and New Farm is "The Valley" or Fortitude Valley. It is a club and alternate scene with live music and food and lots of night activity. You may hear bad things about it, but it is as safe as anywhere these days. Just use common sense at night (ie. don't get drunk and wander alone in alleyways...). There are smaller galleries along Brunswick Street in this area, but it's not your classic cultural area.

Hopefully the links below will give you a good idea....

Enjoy your visit!

In my opinion the best local culture is to find at Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach. It's about the early settlers, how they lived, communication, transport everything from every day life.It is so interesting.

The Qantas museum in Longreach is also interesting.

Then there's Winton, the Waltzing Matilda centre, it honours Banjo Patterson, and this great song.

More local history is to be found in Cloncurry at John Flynn's place.
