Hi,
Congratulations You should inform your mother also, she will be happy.
Menstrual "periods" begin in most girls between 9 and 16 years of age. During the menstrual period a blood-like fluid flows out of the vagina. This is a monthly discharge and requires a girl to wear some kind of sanitary pad or tampon to absorb this fluid and keep it from soiling the clothes. Pads have adhesive strips and are worn inside the panties. Tampons are placed inside the vagina.
In the beginning the periods are irregular and scanty or heavy. Later they become regular. Most periods last from 3 to 7 days. After the period, there may be a day or two of light bleeding, called spotting. This is normal.
If bleeding occurs regularly between periods, the doctor must be consulted. Menstrual periods do not necessarily limit ones activities like swimming, sports, riding, or gym classes. Exercises help get rid of other discomforts that may be present during the periods. These include:
cramps
bloating
soreness or swelling in the breasts
headaches
sudden mood changes or irritability
depression

She's probably been waiting for this for a while. Don't sweat it, just go up to her and ask if she has any tampons or kotex.
There's diagrams on the box, or package, for both kinds. Putting in the first tampon is a bit tricky, you need to get it ALL the way in or it'll feel very uncomfortable. Kotek pads are easier, but tend to leak on both sides, I prefered the Always pads with the wings, it saves the underwear!
Wash blood out with COLD water and soap. Hot only bakes it in.

it's not like u did something wrong. But i understand, cuz I was embarrassed to tell my mom too when I first started. Just tell her u started ur period 1st time (or say u got ur " monthly friend" (why they call it that, i'll never understand!).....and ask her to keep the info private (if that makes u feel better). If u have ?? then ask her, if not, then let her know that ur all set.
