if i use a 1200 watt generator to run a 1500 watt appliance , will it damage the generatot?

You probably won't get very far. Depending on what you're hooking up, there may be a power surge. I don't know that you'd hurt the generator, if it has a circuit breaker, but you won't be doing it any good.

It shouldnt if the generator has a overload reset. You dont have enough generator to run your appliance. It would most likely do damage to the appliance because there is not enough wattage.
