A better question might be when did we get free speech? For years people have been snookered by the major networks. these networks have admitted that they were liberal and promited these ideas. Then for years anyone that said anything about anything was branded a "racsit' or a "sexist". So the vast majority of Americans thought wht's up. You had people in the north thinking gee you mean the south and west think that and people in the south sayng you mean the north and west think that.
Fortunately all these lies came to a head. Last year and this year the liberals mounted an atack on the talk radio, which was exposing all their idiotice flaws and the TV talk show people. Assualt after assualt was beaten by the conservatives and it came t a head when the Senate majority leader, Harry reid jumped on Rush using something he found on a blog that stated Rush called our troops "fake"
Actually what Rush was relating to was the fact that several unscurpulus people were running around posing as soilders and were not and some stated they served here or there and did not. Rush supports the troops, but was upset that the fake ones were stealng the glory and spreading liberal lies (typical).
So the big deal was that the senate majority leader, who could become president as certain things happened woud not check out the inforamation and take up time on the senate floor. So now you have free speech and at a good time.
the Americans are now able to voice their opinion and it showed in the 'illegal" amnesty packages that the democrats wanted passed as did Bush. So Americans now know that they were lied too and that 72% or more of the people are actually conservative. This is from a ton of polls, although liberals will throw up a poll they took at some rally. Mine come from New York, CNN, Fox and many others.
So yes we have had free speech, but do to the untruths and persecution of anyone that stated anything out of the liberal democrat realm was surpressed. Now the cry RACIST is like crying WOLFE.
If we didn't have this then they would have passed the amnesty bill for the fluffy number of 12 million, when the gov states it's more like 38 million and a person on here brought up that the last amnesty there werer three times the number and the government doesn't even tell about the 3 million a year visa jumpers that come here and when the visa expires they hide out in the country. So enjoy your freedom and now you can recognize a liberal as that do not think logically and don't mind if the country is deatroyed. By the way there is more like 40-46 million illegals here and 300,000 crossing the border every month. 1 in 7 caught are from a terror sponsoring nation. Take care.

A democracy requires free and open debate in order to thrive - it's the only way people can make truly informed decisions at the ballot box/voting machine (whatever it is you use). Plus, it allows people to live without the fear that someone will lock them up for some innocent remark.
However, no matter what constitutional guarantees you think you have, no-one enjoys total freedom of speech - even the most liberal democracies have made it a crime to incite criminal acts through speech. A famous American jurist also decreed that freedom of speech does not extend to shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre where no fire exists, due to the risk of injury to the people attempting to flee.

Enlightenment ideas about freedom of conscience.. that the best ideas will ultimately win out in free debate.. this idea that truth needs no defense. Freedom of conscience and legitimacy of government. Democracy is all about clashing and collaborating ideas.
