Oh, Nicholas O, a baby is given a pacifier because the child has not developed any coping mechanisms to deal with issues that they do not understand or are not resolved. Sucking is a primal response to stresses that will guarantee that the child will take nourishment and be comforted. By the time a man reaches adulthood or maturity it is hoped that he has learned additional coping skills that may be more appropriate to certain needs/issues. That said, crying may be an appropriate response to some needs. Although it may not be considered MANLY, I think that many women will attest to a release felt after a good cry. So again, there may be more appropriate ways to calm ones' self such as being able to talk about what has triggered this response, or working it out such as by running, walking, exercise etc. Crying may be the more appropriate response, based on a particular person's coping skills, than say hitting random strangers, hitting someone that has been perceived to have done harm, playing in traffic, or maybe self-mutilation. Also, if a woman's breast does it for you and you find someone willing, go for it. But it is important to remember that an effective coping mechanism is not a crutch. Having a beer when you've had a bad day is one thing. Drinking a case when things don't go your way or you get into a fight with the wife does not resolve the underlying issue.

A baby cries because he/she cannot communicate in any other way. If a man needs to express himself with crying or other strong emotions, its because that is how he needs to express himself. Why give him anything?

If he is crying for a good reason, give him your shoulder. If he is crying to be a big baby, give him a divorce.

Let him cry, give him hugs, let him snuggle into your chest =)
If he doesn't want to be touched or if he doesn't want to talk about it then don't, no questions asked.
