In the music industry, a record producer (or music producer) has many roles, among them controlling the recording sessions, coaching and guiding the musicians, organizing and scheduling production budget and resources, and supervising the recording, mixing and mastering processes. This has been a major function of producers since the inception of sound recording, but in the later half of the 20th century producers also took on a wider entrepreneurial role. These activities comprise record production.

There's more information on the website about this, but if you're really interested you can check out Google and they have other good sites.

Hope this helps :)

A music producer takes an act and adds the additional elements needed to make an outstanding recording - additional instrumentalists, singers, etc. They may bring two or more artists together for a feature album, think Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstat. Or Tiri Takonawa doing Christmas songs with orchestra and choir. He will also be responsible for arrangements of the music (since that is where the musicians are used) to make an overall sound for the album.
The engineer is responsible for miking the instruments and singers, handling the mixer and bringing effects - the electronic path of the sound.
The manager is the one who does the business arrangements, setting up sessions, tours, and other performances and working out licensing agreements if the work appears in ads or shows.
