Hi, I live in New England, so its freezing outside, and the heat in my van has stopped working. I don't have the money to go to the mechanics right now. I wonder if there is something I can do myself to fix it.. or some alternative until I can bring it in.. It is a 1999 Chevy Astro Van LS The air conditioner works fine, and I check the fluids all the time.. I noticed that it runs with the temp. gauge a little over the half way mark.. I do not know it that is normal.. And.. it tends to work sometimes when I am going on a long trip and the tank is full. But I not when I run errands all day.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the thermostat on the cooling system is stuck open. Go to your local auto parts store and get one. If you follow the top radiator hose back to the engine that is probably where the thermostat is located. If you are not sure ask the auto parts store people to show you where it is. You can also ask them about tools needed. If they are a good auto parts store they will be glad to help.

If you know where it is you can remove it and test it. It should be closed until placed in near boiling water then it should open. If you take it out and can blow air through it it is stuck open. Replace it. If you place it in a pan of water on the stove it should open sometime before the water boils but only 10-20 degrees before boiling.

If the thermostat was stuck open on your van it should set a check engine light with a code saying the motor is under its operating temperature. Since you didnt mention a check engine light being on I'd say you should probably make sure your antifreeze isnt low. If its not take it to a GM dealer to diagnose. The most likely cause would be a bad temperature actuator or a bad control head.

assuming the blower works.... could have an air pocket in the heater core... which will not allow the warm coolant from the engine to circulate thus not allowing the heater to get warm... try taking the radiator cap off and letting the vehicle run with the heat on high for a good 20 minutes or so and see if there is any heat inside the vehicle... if there is still no heat then you may have a partial blockage in there somewhere or your water pump is getting weak.... best of luck with it
