I think part of the reason the show was so successful was its positing of polar opposites which are actually components of everyone's personality. For instance, the obvious is the Ginger/Mary Anne dyad, but there's also the Professor/Gilligan - they're equally representative of polar opposites.
That being said, I'm a little bit of both dependent upon mood and situation: when in a crowd of people I don't know it's easier to be a Ginger and assume I'm being adored by all and sundry; when hanging out at home with kids, it's nice to be a Mary Anne. ;)
