I am flying to Cancun next Thursday and would like to watch a good movie on my portable DVD player. I prefer thrillers or some sci-fi; I am watching "lord of the rings" currently in the nude so exclude that from any suggestions.

As a response to another, my nudity has NOTHING to do with my request for real and honest opinion on movies. I was directed before birth to be as honest as a can and i am working to this end.
I do enjoy a lot of entertainment and I am still interested in dvd works that are intrigueing but not illegal.

The Godfather trilogy is great. Dr. Zhivago is a good long one as well.

Helter Skelter (TV miniseries about Manson Family)
Back to the Future 1-3~They fit together beautifully!
Dune~original or miniseries
Star Wars IV-VI or Star Wars I-III
The Vanishing (1993)~It's an excellent thriller, but it's not even two hours long. Match it up with "Arlington Road", which also stars Jeff Bridges.
Peter Jackson's King Kong~It's not one of my favorites, but it's a 3-hour film.
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Since thrillers and sci fi films usually are not of epic proportions, I'll add these titles:
Lawrence of Arabia
Doctor Zhivago
Gone With the Wind
The Great Ziegfeld (b&w spectacular)
The Good Earth (b&w)

If you want a thrilling, fast-paced, and truely entertaining movie that is long...I proudly suggest King Kong (2005). This movie is not only brilliantly directed, but action-packed from the moment it starts, to when the credits roll. It is about 3 hours long and there is never a dull moment in it. If you for some reason get bored, keep watching!! Give it a chance, I promise you will be amazed. Hope this helps!

Hi. "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" is a great Steven Spielberg movie that is 131 minutes long.
"Grand Prix" is a classic movie about Formula One Racing.It was originally filmed in Cinerama 70MM . The racing scenes are spectacular .The movie is 168 minutes long.

The movie Dune is a very good sci-fi flick and Fight Club is a good long running movie. Forrest Gump is a long movie that I enjoyed.

as if this was a real question...
there aren't many long movies that are thrillers or sci-fi; you can't maintain the tension for a thriller that long.
Martian Chronicles--not great, but definitely watchable
the Stand--not thriller or sci-fi, but it might be close enough plus its 6+ hours. again not great, but entertaining
Shogun--the TV miniseries is 6+ hours. one of the most watched TV miniseries. not exactly a thriller, but many hours of an Englishman trying not to get beheaded in medieval Japan

It depends what you are into, but two movies that are long that i enjoy are, Pulp Fiction and The Departed.
