What ? I have never known that before !! I know that you have to have car insurance to be able to go on campus... but health never,,
If I where you I would really look into this, I think it is wrong ,,, and very illegal,,
Ask a another student , or the dean .. Good luck ,
But I dont think you have to have it ,, unless it is one of those NOT CREDITED COLLAGES?? IF so you should not go there ,, ?????

They don't want to be responsible for you if you get sick. They're afraid they might have to take care of you.
$1648 is CHEAP these days! Did you know the price we pay for health insurance has increased by 70% just since Bush has been in office? And it was considered a crisis even then!
When I went to college in the late 1960s, health insurance for college students was FREE. As a student of the college you were automatically covered. Tuition was also free! There was a registration fee of something like $75, and you had to pay for your books, and that was it!

this is one of the stranger questions I have seen.
Health insurance is very expensive. I do not believe that anyone can force you to have insurance to attend college. Are there sports involved?
I have worked as a court recorder in hundreds of federal cases, been a court reporter in many others...this question is hard for me to answer because I have never seen, heard of, or read anything about anything like this.
perhaps you need to ask for advice from another college counsellor. Sounds like some sort of scam to me...I have also attended colleges in 3 states. This SO makes no sense to me...
edit---I have not been to college in 10 years---things may have changed. pay attention to the answers that others have given

Depends on the Colleges handbook of rules and regulations. Some colleges do require insurance and if you cannot provide coverage yourself, they can mandate it. Depends on the college. often grants or scholarships will permit your insurance to be part of your award package as an expense.

Yes they can. It's standard at almost ALL colleges these days for students to be required to either show proof of insurance or buy it through them.
The price you quote, by the way, is VERY heavily subsidized by the taxpayers - to buy it on your own would cost a lot more.

Can you afford medical care if you got sick or had an accident?
Talk to the college about financial aid.
