I work in a place where there are more young people and some of them (not all)treat some of the older employees like we have the plague or some kind of disease.I`m 51 and it just makes me feel bad,I hope and pray that I never treated anyone like that! If I did I beg their forgiveness!

I'm 51 also. There may be some young people like that, but the majority of the ones I come in contact with are nice, bright, caring young people. I think it's more that they don't know the older folks and maybe think they will judge or criticize them. They may also just be more comfortable around others their own age. If the young people and the older people get to know one another as individuals, they would have a better attitude towards each another.

I feel ignored by younger people when I shop and do some other activities, but not where I work! I am a teacher, and our younger teachers are wonderful. They are very respectful and ask us older ones for advice. We ask them, too! They often have a different perspective and it's good to exchange ideas. We all can learn from others, regardless of age. We work very hard at my school, but we also enjoy each other very much. We older ones have a lot of good laughs on ourselves - "Is it hot in here, or is it just me?" "Where did I leave my red ink pen?" "Who is our current principal?"

Sorry to say I have met young people who do not seem to have any respect for their elders. Fortunately, they have been pretty few and far between in my life, but I know exactly what you mean. In my business (the bead business) I usually know more than they do, so they have to be nice to me so I will tell them how to make things and teach their classes, lol. But I find that if I talk to them just like I talk to my older friends, and ask about their lives and what they are doing, how they are feeling, what they think, they respond in kind. It's really easy to ignore teens and young people sometimes, because some of them seem like such idiots part of the time, but if you actually treat them like real people that matter, it is amazing what communication lines open up.

They always ask me for spare change & I have to say no, but I enjoy hangin out with younger people sometimes because they keep me humble about where I came from & what we share in common...no matter what our ages are. Remember when you were young? I bet you didn't hang out with the older crowd at your workplace unless your boss told you to. If you did, then you were in a different era & most likely an entirely different field of work. Bring something with chocolate into work & I'll bet it will change their moods in a hurry. It's a great conversation starter. Second best thing to ice cream! First rule...never ever BEG! They will hate you for it. It's a sign of weakness & causes confusion about what you might really want!

There were many of us older people in the workplace , and the younger ones treated us as one of the team. We laughed, joked, and had little talks together. The turmoil I had was with my woman boss who always demeaned me. I had a nervous breakdown over it. Of course many of us are in left field when it comes to a discussion films, or music, or technology. We are going, I dunno. Within my family, and friends I have been like the matriarch, and always had fun times and memories. However, since TBI, I'm not the same, yet they always make sure I'm okay.

I have had people be rude to me because I'm old, but I have the last laugh there. I KNOW they will someday be old, if they're lucky, and I KNOW retribution will come then, because you reap what you sow.

I've never had younger people ignore or shun me because of my age. The ones I worked with and the ones I bowl with are all really super people who live interesting lives and who seem genuinely interested in the lives of those around them.

I don't but my Mom does.
I think young people don't know how to act with us, they look at us as a authority figure. Go and join in with them when you can. Start slowly by just saying hi and a simple question. Show them we are fun not crabby. They will include you I'm sure.

I haven't had that experience because I usually get along with everyone . When I was nursing in the 60's and 70's ,we ranged in ages from new grads ,right up to people ready to retire. In my neighbourhood, my husband and I are the oldest people but we are friends with everyone and visa versa.
