Original South Park shows - How did they do it?

The original episodes of South park were done with construction paper, etc etc. What was the actual process tho to transfer it to film?

It was stop motion like Gumby, actually, hand drawn animation is the same too, they just took a number of pictures and put them together.

You set up the shot, you take a single frame. You move the construction paper slightly, take another frame. Continue until you have enough shots to make up a full episode.

I think a better question is WHY did they do it?
