I saw a prototype BMW on T.V a while back, they said it could run on hydrogen or gasoline.
I guess what I'm raelly wondering is if there is a way to convert an internal combustion engine to run on hydrogen?

Yes, they'll be just like a typical 4 stroke engine although I'm sure the compression ratio would have to be a little different for peak effeciency. One reason the flex fuel engines aren't as fuel effecient when running E85 is because the compression ratio really needs to be much higher to take advantage of the high octane rating of ethanol. Can't though because it has to be low engough to run straight gasoline.

In addition, the engine is going to need a spark ignition just like a gasoline engine. Ever hear of the warning about not having an open flame or spark near a wet cell battery that's being recharged? Take my word for it, they'll explode throwing acid and pieces of battery everywhere. They can explode because a charging battery vents, yes you guessed it, hydrogen. As the one fellow said, it probably uses the type of carb similiar to what an LP gas engine uses.

hydrogen is a flammable gas same as L P gas ,natural gas or acetylene. any 4 cycle engine will run on it with the proper metering system. the exhaust is water(steam) & hot air
it can be stored as a compressed gas under high pressure or can be generated by runing various fuels such as gasoline through a catylist bed to seperate the hydrogen in the vehicle. chrysler has a van set up this way & it takes up a lot of the van space.
you can buy hydrogen at some welding supply stores & it might be possible to modify an l p gas carburetor from a fork lift motor to use it on a motorcycle, or maybe not, I dont have a clue. if I see a cycle with a welding cylinder in place of a gas tank on the news I'll know you made it work.

If you are thinking about saving on fuel cost, hydrogen is not the way to go because of the higher cost, lower distance per cylinder, very dangerous for two reasons--high pressure explosion of hydrogen bottle and it is very very flammable.

If it was an either/or engine then yes it is a 4 stroke. same ignition, different fuel source. can you do it at home? no.

Probaly more like a diesel in it fires off Compression. Don't need Spark.
