bone marrow biopsy may be done in a health care provider's office or in a hospital. Informed consent for the procedure is typically required. The patient is asked to lie on his or her abdomen (prone position) or on his/her side (decubitus position). The skin is cleansed, and a local anesthetic such as lidocaine is injected to numb the area. Patients may also be pretreated with analgesics and/or anti-anxiety medications, although this is not a routine practice.
Typically, the aspirate is performed first. An aspirate needle is inserted through the skin until it abuts the bone. Then, with a twisting motion, the needle is advanced through the bony cortex (the hard outer layer of the bone) and into the marrow cavity. Once the needle is in the marrow cavity, a syringe is attached and used to aspirate ("suck out") liquid bone marrow.
Subsequently, the biopsy is performed if indicated. A different, larger trephine needle is inserted and anchored in the bony cortex. The needle is then advanced with a twisting motion and rotated to obtain a solid piece of bone marrow. This piece is then removed along with the needle. The entire procedure, once preparation is complete, typically takes 10-15 minutes.

Your doctor can do it in the office but will probably do it in the hospital as an in and out thing. Yes, they will sedate you some but it will still hurt. I can understand your fear, you are young to be having this done but the doctor will find out the information she needs and ths will be helpful to you in the long run. You are not being a baby. I am many years older than you and I would be afraid also. I have had tons of tests done but no way would I want to have this test. My mom-in-law had to have it when she had bone cancer and it was very painful for her. Maybe they will sedate you better because of your young age. Ask the doctor if he can put you to sleep for the test, then you won't feel it. Good Luck hope everything turns out ok for you.

you are NOT being a baby. anytime you have to have a medical procedure done it's your right to ask all the questions you want. Listen to me, you should've said to your doctor during your appointment when they told you that you had to get a biopsy done, "I'm nervous now. Will it hurt? Will you sedate me?" etc. Or you could've called back with alot of those q's after the fact. It's your health - they would've answered your questions at the office. It is painful but you will be fine.

These are all questions for your doctor.
Most importantly, try to calm down a little bit. I know that's a tall order- I hate doctors and have had several scary procedures done. Trust me, the calmer you are, the easier it will be for you. Do some research online, talk to your doctor (ask all of your questions), and try your best to relax. It will be over quickly and then you can get back to normal life. Good luck sweetie.

The Medical practitioner of today are truly tuned into anti pain prep now a days! They will do everything they can to prevent you from going through a lot of pain. It will hurt a little, but if you can stand a penicillin shot, you will be able to hold up for this! Keep your head up and tell yourself that you will get past this and move on to bigger and better things! Good Luck and God bless you...

The guy above seemed to answer all the questions except the pain one...
I know this really seems like a downer, but it does hurt. However, it is tolerable. This is the hard part, but you'll be much more comfortable if you relax and don't worry about it. Good luck!

From what I've heard they take it from the leg bone, which has no feeling inside so that won't hurt. They only make a small incision in the skin and muscle. And they use pain killer first. It'll ache a bit later, but it wont' be horrible.
