hi my cam chain is making a whining noise and needs replacing, the bike has done only 8000kms. Been told it was caused by over revving at road speeds. i thought ttrs could handle commuting work easily. i know wr's and crf's are no good for road work but ttrs!. anybody else had this trouble?.

i'm assuming you have a dual overhead cam system on it. when you take the top end apart, be sure to check the sprockets on the ends of the camshafts to see if there has been any damage to the. if it is whining like you said, i'd be sure to check that out. other than that, yeah just replace your cam chain. they're cheap to, around $20.

Worn cam chains don't whine, they clatter as will a bad cam chain tensioner. A whine could be caused by a chain guide that broke and the chain is rubbing metal on metal somewhere in the engine. If you change the oil while it's hot and find lots of aluminum shavings, then that's probably it unless you haven't run it very long. Not sure how your engine is made, but it is uses an idler as well as or instead of slipper type guides, the bearing could have gone out and is letting the teeth on the sproket rub on some part of the engine. By the way, cam chains on Jap bikes will run an very, very long time. I measured the cam chain on my 110,000 mile KZ1000 and it had very little wear, nowhere close to being even half worn out. One bit of advice, be wary of anyone who is quick to give a very short answer when it comes to determining a problem, UNLESS they've had the very same problem with the very same model of bike or car. Those quick answers are often wrong. Most mechanical problems have more than one possible cause.

Your description is a little vague - which side of the motor is the noise coming from? top or bottom of the engine? front or back? Whining can be caused by ALOT of different things in the engine.
