saulg21 is right. Even the big directors only make a small salary, if any. They usually opt for a percentage instead of or as part of their pay. Some directors, such as James Cameron, told them to keep his salary and apply it towards the budget of 'Titanic' and he took a bigger percentage instead. He risked every penny to get the movie made and just by chance-of-lightning, the movie made boo-koos of money. And so did he. The average director makes about 200,000 salary and then take a percentage of the box office and dvd sales. If the movie loses money (and most do) then the director will only get salary unless they opted out of salary for a bigger percentage, in which case, if the movie lost money, the director would make nothing. :)

The above posts are really incorrect. Major directors make major salaries (think millions). Most directors don't get participation on the back-end, especially for huge movies. They may get net points (which are basically worthless). Studios are reluctant to give up any back-end, this is almost entirely relegated to the independent film world. The reason is because independent movies don't have the money on the front-end. Studios can fully finance a picture. The huge budgets of major movies go to pay the talent including the director.

There are exceptions. Usually if the director is working on a smaller budget movie (i.e. "passion project'), he'll take a cut on salary, and a piece of back-end. Speilberg takes gross points, which is a huge exception. The Titantic example is also rare. Basically, Cameron is a maniac and the film was headed toward disaster (overbudget) so he gave up his salary to finish it.

Most of them make a percentage of the movie's take.
