Kudos to you for studying petrology! It's one of my favorite areas, although my field of study is mineralogy. It sounds to me like pumice, tuff, or maybe even a light colored schist could be possibilities for the rock you found. I should tell you, though, that identifying a rock or mineral based on a verbal or written description is pretty close to impossible. If there is anywhere on the web that you could post a picture of this rock, I could take a look and give you a better guess. Otherwise, speculation is all you'll really be able to get no matter how confident people sound.

Good luck with your studies!

Sounds like a weathered schist. The bronzy colored stuff could be muscovite, a different type of mica from biotite. The white could be feldspar, and it is crumbly because it isn't fresh. But really, it is close to impossible to identify without seeing a photo.

I almost want to say it is a schist. These metamorphic rocks are rich in micas that flake easily and can be light colored. Pumice, as mentioned before could be a possibility. Where were you camping?

If it is lightweight and crumbles, then it might be pumice. Is it vesicular? Where did you find it? What type of rocks are common to that area? It is very difficult to ID a rock from a verbal description.
