"A" is indeed correct.
We (the U.S.) thought that an economically recovered 'strong' Germany would be an ally and a bulwark against the further spread of communism which had taken over all of Eastern Europe and seemed likely to spread further in Europe as well as in Asia. Hence conflicts in Greece and later in Korea, Vietnam, etc.
