I agree with the ice cream - so when people say vanilla what they are really thinking of is milk (ice cream).

Like a lot of other people are saying, it probably has to do with the ice cream and flowers being white (among other things).

And there are most likely some folks who think vanilla is flavorless and, therefore, associate it with white due to the "white people have no flavor" stereotype.

By the way, I'm not vanilla... I'm white chocolate. LOL

It's probably because of vanilla ice cream which is white. Just like how chocolate is associated with black, even though there is white chocolate. This question doesn't have anything to do with cultures or groups, & you posted it in the wrong section.

Cuz it's easy to use on your shopping list & say out in a public place. Everyone knows where to get their "fix" of ice cream in the town they live in. It's funny to hear the kids of ALL ages on the public transit system all talking about their grocery lists. After a while, it gets old. I miss the old days when people asked for it by name!........Frozen confectionary delights! I just find it all so amusing these days. I get frozen yoghurt...it's a sure bet & there's no confusion about what I want. I'm so glad to be out of the "loop" & ice cream free! I'm lactos intolerant anyway!

Think ice cream...Vanilla is to white as chocolate is to black..... Vanilla is considered the UNflavor of flavors. When someone says something is "vanilla" meaning associated with being white, it refers to a lot of the traditional qualities of being white: not calling attention to oneself, prudishness, playing it safe, white picket fences, everything nice and neat on the outside, etc. And then the 60's came, and shook all that up.

Because the flowers are white.
And, because the vanilla bean is so strong, you only use a little of it in recipes, which is not enough to change the color of it to dark.

Hahaha you would have to have the funniest nickname. If it were mine it would be -$300,000 (note the debit sign).

Good point about vanilla. I guess vanilla products are usually coloured white to dostinguish it from chocolate and caramel maybe?

I never thought of vanilla as a color at all. I have always thought of vanilla as a flavor. One never asks for, "white ice
cream" one asks for vanilla.
