Server Question?????

Im a computer guy. i fix them in my spare time and am on them all the time, and i have never really got to talking about servers, so thus the question never came up. Now im honestly curious.
What is a server? what are they and what are they used for (windows server, ubuntu server etc.) Thanks in advance to all answers! =)

Basically a computer that "serves" things to other computers is a server.

There are "stand alone" computers, and there are servers. My desktop computer is a stand alone. I can connect it to another stand alone for some things. But mostly if I connect to another computer that is listening for people to connect so that it can serve them, then thats a server.

It can be an office server. Letting people share files, central backups, share a printer.

It can be an Internet server. Handling traffic for the internet. People connect to it to get news, get their emails, chat together.

Unix, Linux, Windows, Mac, and other operating systems on a server are all fairly interchangeable. They all have their pros and cons.

As a repair guy this might interest you. Old computers that cannot run the latest greatest windows games, make great linux servers. I have two at my house. I host dozens of domains, hundreds of email accounts, host multiplayer games. All on computers I would have shoved into the closet because they couldnt run WinXP when I upgraded. It takes alot less computer to run linux, and much less to be a server, than most people think. Also very little requirement for graphics and sound so its a good use for old graphic/sound cards also. An old junky windows machine can be a very powerful linux machine.

server is a system where many people can save thier data from where they get rightss of aceessing any hardware from any pc they are mostly used in it companies,motor company actually nowaday servers are necessary in companies
