Macs dont get viruses, are real easy to use, and look 10x better than a windows computer. Now there is a slight compatibility issue but new Macs can run Mac OS and Windows!!!
Windows computers these days come with Vista, not XP. That means a lot of your old programs and accesories wont work to begin with.
Go Mac. Everyones doing it.

Depends on your budget and what quality you want. Also your own computer skills. Ill first tell you about a Mac laptop.
Hmmm... I'm assuming you want to chat with your friends with Aim and Yahoo. Well Mac gets very basic messenger. Also downloads are very , very limited. So if you want to surf the web maybe a Mac is okay. Also mac prices are outrageous , but the computers are very reliable. Starting price for just a basic apple computer is $1,300. Comparing to other computers the spects are very low. If you like gaming don't get this computer either. You may want to search ebay for a cheap mac but be careful. They may be damaged.
Regular computers are probably better. You can get a good computer for $850. Also it has much better specs. Regular laptops may not be as reliable and probably wont last as long as the mac. However you can download pretty much everything you find on the web. However you should get something like gateway or dell. These are big names and have great customer service.
If I was you I would forget about the Mac. I really think you would be happier with a regular laptop. You would probably want to download pictures and all that stuff and it is so much harder on a mac.
It is really up to you (and your dad) on which one you want to get.
Thanks,
-Dan

You will probably hear all kinds of arguments about Mac vs PC. Which operating system is better? The truth is, it depends on what you are doing and what you are accustomed to... and that's why Macs are better. You can run Windows on a Mac (using software called Parallels or Boot Camp, it's easy). You cannot run the Mac OS on a Windows machine (unless you have serious computer skills and are willing to spend a lot of time on it). Which is better, two options or one? No brainer.
Make sure you get one with an Intel chip, it will take a much longer time for it to become obsolete.

I just switched to a mac about a few months ago, and it was the BEST move I have ever made. Mac's last a lot longer than PC, run faster, start faster, and last longer. Also, they have less problems. The best plus is it doesn't have Vista! Vista is HORRIBLE, I had nothing but problems with it, but another plus about a mac is, if you wanted Vista or XP, you CAN install it on your mac, thanks to bootcamp. Mac's are the way to go- walk around any campus today and everyone is switching. User friendly, fun, and worth the money. If you need a cheaper one, go to ebay or buy a refurbished one off of apple.com. Good luck, and switch to a mac, you won't regret it, you'll be so happy!

Go try one out and see what you think. I love mine to death and do all my work on it. If you're going to be doing graphics work and/or photography, applications like Adobe CS, Aperture, Motion and Final Cut all work extremely well on Macs or are made especially for Macs. The iLife suite is also great for basic media management. It'll cost more upfront but I'd wager it'll last longer. You'll likely have it all four years you're in school and then some. It's nothing to see people with Mac computers that are 5 or more years old (I have one that's 5 years old and one that's 6). They're extremely stable, you're not going to lose any major projects to crashes and you're less likely to get viruses. They're also designed to work easily with peripheral devices like cameras, camcorders, hard drives, etc. It has a lot of intangible benefits in terms of productivity (more time working, less time worrying about drivers and malware) that people don't mention when they complain about the price. You're eligible for a 10% education discount and $100 toward a printer. From late May through mid-September, they give you a free iPod Touch. It's a pretty sweet pot in the summer months. You said yourself your friends all love theirs. Why don't you ask them why and see what their reasoning is? And Windows 7 doesn't suck as much as Vista, but most of what people like about it has already been done by Mac OS X, and done YEARS ago.

When it comes to Windows vs. Mac, the real question is, better FOR WHAT? If you plan on recording music, Mac will probably be a better choice (Garage Band is not available for Windows, and programs that are available are way more expensive). If you plan on doing time-series analysis, stick to Windows (eViews is not available for Mac). These are extremes, and there's a whole world between them...
As to finding a cheap Mac, it just isn't going to happen...

Check an Apple reseller like MacMall or the Apple website. There should be a link to specials. Also, if you have an Apple store near you check with them, sometimes they have "refreshed" models. These are computers that have been set to company specs and checked out. they come with a full warranty.
It is best not to purchase a used laptop from an individual. They may have been abused.

A MacBook is a "regular" laptop
If you want a "cheaper" one you can look on ebay
or
go to the edu section of the Apple.com store where they have all the student deals, that way it will be covered under a full warranty.

Get iWork08 for only $79 instead of Office for Mac. It is compatible and far less bloated.

depends....
It comes down to a few things first what are you planning to do with it ?
word and office applications, aim, internet - tie
video editing, photo editing, music editing, - advantage macbook (alot of neat software preloaded)
gaming, specific programs(most only windows compatible) advantage pc (alot of programs are designed for windows)
cheap - advantage pc
then the next big thing is what the computer actually has in it ex processor, ram, hard drive etc...
so this isn't the best question, need to give more information

If you get a refurbished laptop whether or not is a mac or something, I can tell you it will be a bad computer.
The Windows vs Mac thing can never be answered, its all opinion.
I like Windows, since Mac's have problems with practically everything that doesn't come with it or have a special version for it.
