The second you think of nothing you realize it and then think about the fact that you're thinking of nothing. I think it is achievable in extremely short bursts but almost impossible to maintain for a significant period of time.
People really into meditation claim they can do it though, but I don't really think they are thinking of nothing.

Not possible. The mind is "on" all the time, even when you're sleeping. People have been trying to clear their minds through meditation and other methods all throughout human history. Usually, the best we can do is just let our thoughts float by, without becoming attached to them.
If you ever figure out how to think of nothing, let us know...

if done correctly, meditation can somewhat help you to think of nothing. i have trouble sleeping as i cant stop thinking. i found that forcing the mind to think of a simple thought over and over again you can reduce your thoughts to one simple thing such as concentrating on your breathing eventually you just stop thinking. its taken a lot of practice and doesn't always work but essentially you can clear your mind, stop thinking. or at least not notice that your thinking which i think is close enough.

I think you can think about nothing for quite a while, until you realize it, then it's all over.

you clear your mind of conscious thought. you still think on a sub-conscious level, but you are not aware, hence you are thinking about nothing.

That is impossible because you will always be thinking no matter how hard you try not to think. I think.
