You shouldn't unless they actually deserve one, and that is almost never.

Actually, it depends on what state you live in as to whether employees are required to have a break. In the state of Iowa the only employees that you have to give a break to is someone who is under the age of 16, otherwise, legally, you do not have to give them a break. In Iowa a break is a benefit not a requirement.
However, morally you should give an employee a break so they can recharge. It will make them a lot more productive. You will also keep your turnover rate lower.

Just throwing this out there....a study found that smokers tend to be more productive than non smokers because they took several smalls breaks on a daily basis. The pricipal still applies...breaks=happier employees. The type of employee you are dealing with is not exactly the best demographic though as they tend to be there simply to make money and not really work their way up the ladder (so to say).... Good Luck...and try giving compliments...people who are happier tend to work harder, stay later and be less likely to quit...Overall have a heart.

Ok I am a manager at Mcdonalds in de. It is the law to give employees breaks if they are schedualed to work for more then 5 hours. Especailly if they are under 18. And wouldnt you want to cut into labor percentages by giving them breaks.

Everybody needs a break, so that they have a chance to recharge their bodies and brains. People who don't get a break have the tendency to make mistakes (i.e. give wrong change, etc.). Also, giving people a break makes for a better work environment and creates happier workers. Many studies have been done that show that happy workers are more productive workers, which is always a big plus for the manager or owner. Lastly, aren't there labour laws that require workers to be given breaks?

Yes, there are even laws about that.
If someone works over 5hrs they have to get a break.
I'm not sure about the other laws so you might want to check up on it.
Maybe you could also give each person a brief smoke break if they want it and if they abuse it you can make rules, like you can tell them when their time's up and if they don't come in/go out without asking you can clock them out or write them up or something..or just yell at them. That's what my work does

First off it's against the law not to... and I doubt you want to deal with a lawsuit!!
Also, if you don't give your employees breaks they will not be as productive as they could be if you did... and it will reflect in the service provided to the customers.

Well, it is the law in most places.
And besides, everybody needs to go to the bathroom. You dont want them to go in a pickle bucket or something, do you?
