I don't like to lie. I will tell them everything. I'll leave it up to them to make the right choice for themselves. But you know if I ever find the crap he's gonna be grounded and I'll flush his stash, then look for it everyday after.

Yes I did tell my kids the truth. I told them the bad things that happened and tried to discourage them that way. I am not so sure that works. However, acting like I was above all of the influences probably wouldn't have either. I wish I had the answers. I hear about new drugs every day on the news. It's hard to keep up. It gets to the point where weed seems so mild you almost hope that is all they get involved in. These are some scary @ss times.

Of course. I plan to be completely honest with my children when that time comes. Will I discourage them from trying harmful drugs of course. I don;t consider alcohol a harmful drug...but I will expect that they act responsibly when they are old enough to do so.

I agree with Dee, a lesson from the parent to learn from. And what a wonderful opportunity to offer guidance and instill self-respect. I could have a giggle about the silly little things, but offer a warning about the reality and dangers. My dad once told me how he discovered cannabis in the 60's and as there was nothing to suggest it was a terribly dangerous thing to smoke, and that he kind of enjoyed it, he decided it was OK. In moderation of course. But he told me he did not want any other drugs in the house. He felt they were more dangerous, although he was curious about magic mushrooms! Unfortunately I did not honor his request, and tried a variety of other substances. I therefore have a bit of a sordid tale to tell. I agree that there's no sense in hiding ones valuable life's lesson.

Most Heroin addicts I have known, do not take responsibility for thier actions. Once in rehab, they are forced to acknowledge things like getting kids taken away, etc. This makes them want to escape back to the drug, which in turn will make reality worse the next time. My issue is, we are encouraging this by giving able bodied 20 somethings link and other benefits. We need to offer free rehab, but then require work- No free rides- Hand up, not hand out!

i think it would depend on how old they were..if old enough i would tell them all about the bad stuff that could happen, like getting addicted and such..then once i knew they understood then i would tell them that yes, i have tried "simple" drugs but only out of curiosity and i will never do it again, thats why they are illegal. maybe show them a few things on the net of what can happen when you do drugs. Good luck to you :)

Both my mom and dad have (both drugs and alcohol) and told me the truth when I asked (around 13) & my dad answered all my drug questions when I was in high school and I've never done drugs and I don't drink. Actually, a "friend" of mine gave me drugs at school once, I came home and gave them to my dad and asked him what it was and told him to get rid of it.
Worked for us.

I've never done any drugs, so I'd tell them that. As far as alcohol goes-- sure, I've had drinks. But I'm most definitely not, nor have I ever been, an alcoholic.

Absolutely. Did and would as much as they would ask when I felt they were old enough for it to be appropriate. If you want to teach your kids the evils of drugs, as well as honesty and integrity how could you not? The thing is like sex, they are exposed to this type of thing earlier and earlier, unfortunately. They hardly have time to be kids anymore. But they will hear it and be exposed to it somewhere, so why not from their parents and if the case, experience.
