Why do americans solely base their choices on whom the next president should be based on their prefrences on gay marriage or abortion, when these topics hardly play any part in the average persons life? Shouldn't americans focus on the more important issues at hand which play a part in every americans life, or at least a large portion of americans. i.e.: Iraq war, education, economy...??

I'm pro Ron Paul... just throwing it out there so people dont think this question is totally biased.

i could not vote for someone that denies people their rights. gay rights, abortion are examples of these. next, they'll re-institute prohibition.

obviously, i look at other issues too...the war, the economy, healthcare...

I don't. But, I vote for the candidate's whose views best represent my views. And those are two issues are among several that persuade my vote.

The problem is that those two issues were never considered critical 60-70 years ago because everyone believed they were wrong. Now, many don't. And we can see the detrimental effects these have had on our society. Rampant STD's and a loss of respect for life. Sexual freedom wasn't so free after all. And they do affect every American in that there are huge sums of tax monies going into education, prevention and treatment of the effects of these acts. And with the debate ramping up on National Health-Care, it's even more important.

regrettably, i think of those 2 themes(abortion and gay rights) could trump all others for many folk. that's quite unhappy simply by fact so few human beings, relative to the entire inhabitants, will ever have an abortion, and so few human beings, relative to the entire inhabitants, are gay. meanwhile healthcare, unemployment, training, secure practices, very own privateness, and surprisingly a lot each thing else outcomes everybody. everybody is so hung up on those 2 themes, that are nonetheless needed, yet this forces the applicants, from the two celebration, to outline themselves based in basic terms approximately exclusivley on their postions to themes that i does no longer even put in the precise 5 themes that would desire to venture all individuals.

Because some people actually care when innocent human beings are being unjustly put to death, whether it personally affects them or not.

Right now, there is no one in the Republican party I'd vote for other than Ron Paul. He's against the killing in Iraq AND against killing human beings in the womb--a good combination.

The topics of abortion and gay rights tell us about the candidates' principles and character. After all, what good is electing a candidate that promises you everything, if he doesn't have the character to back it up.

These are strightforward, easily understood, emotionally charged issues that split people into opposing camps - hence the term wedge issues. Gun control is another.

You are right. One thing about the Republican Debates, it's deja vu all over again. Topics are old and tired.
