most chemical engineers work for oil companies. they use computers and equations to calculate out the numbers in designing chemical processing equipment. an example of a piece of equipment is a distillation tower used to get gasoline out of crude oil. the tower has a widtht, a height, it has plates inside it, the plates have holes in them. engineers calculate out all the numbers that lets the company make one of these type processors. this is just an example. im sure they do other things in other type companies. you may not start out as a plant director right out of college. you might have to start out lower on the totem pole and then move up to plant director. thats my guess, anyway.

here in where I work, our plant manager and our process manager are both chemical engineers.
my friend, who is also a chemical engineer, is the general manager of our city's water supply company.
my husband is working for a multinational beer manufacturing company and their plant director is a chemical engineer.
i also know of some friends who work as process engineers/supervisors, process design engineers, quality engineers and production supervisors.

I look at it as the best paid engineering job. It is also the toughest.

You could work for soup, concrete, chemical, or pharmaceutical firms.
