I am working 12 hour night shifts, 4 days a week. I am enrolling in school to take my pre-req's to become a Psych Tech. It's only 4 classes, which I can do in 1 semester. The classes are Biology, English, Math, and Psych. I had 2 people tell me that I won't be able to do it. Do you guys think it is too much? Oh and by the way I have two boys a 2 and a 3 year old. Please help!!

If you were a pro at this then I'd say go for it. But since you've got so much else on your plate I would say take Bio, English, and Psych, and save math for the summer and take it by itself. Then next semester if you need to take more pre-req's you'll have already done a semester with three, and you can decide if you could pick up a 4th one.

It really depends on you and your current schedule. If you are a disciplined student, then i'm sure you can manage a four class semester, including your work and family. You need to consider how many hours a week the classes meet. If we assume the typical amount is three, that gives you twelve added hours of work a week. The basic formula is for ever hour of classwork, you will have three of homework. I can tell you right off the bat that figure is hardly ever right. Just make sure you have time when you can solely focus on homework and learning. Plus, you will be able to drop classes for a certain amount of time if the load is too much.

That sounds like too much. I am taking the same amount of classes right now and only working 10.5 hours a week. I'm still stressed out. Biology will load you with homework and you have tons of studying. I recommend taking only two classes this semester. If you think you can take more after those classes are over, extend your schedule.

Keep in mind that you are expected to spend 2-3 hours studying outside of class for every hour in the classroom, and you start to see that this might be too much. If you spend 12 hours in class per week, 36 hours studying, and 48 hours working, you will find yourself choosing between sleep and the children. What if the kids get sick, and you end up with the flu or a bad cold? You need to be able to take care of yourself as well.

That really depends on your time management and balance skills. Of course children do play a role in your time especially with unexpected situations such as taking them to the doctor or staying at home with them when they are sick. However, if you have a strong support system with family and friends, you could pull it off. It really does depend on how much help you have and you ability to balance it all. If you do feel it may become too much, you could do it in two semesters instead of one. Regardless, your committment to all of your priorities and your goal will depend on you being able to juggle it all successfully. All the best to you and I hope that helps!

It is definitely going to be a hard few months if you do it. My wife and I have 2 boys (5 and 6), take care of our elderly granmother who has alzheimers, and are carrying 18 credits this term...and we are still alive. :-)

Maybe you can work Friday-Monday...that would allow you to have nights off that you can attend class or study.
