What a bunch of dumb a.s.s people.............. I just went through this same thing and this is how it goes.
If you are an ex spouse male or female and you have been divorced for less than 10 years you are entitled to a small percentage of the other spouses social security benifits. If you have been divorced longer than 10 years and attempt to collect on the other spouses benefits then you will be denied because there is a 10 year limit. It doesnt matter how long you were married 1 year or 20 years, it is the 10 year limit after divorce that will be the deciding factor as to if you are intitled to part of his or her benefits

Ten years is the magic number for entitling a wife to a lot of stuff. However I don't think this means he gets just half of his social security. After all he could marry 4 woman for 10 years each and they all could collect half. It is just a percentage.
You have to remember she has can't marry if she wants to collect!!!!
What has this got to do with you anyways? You are just a a girl friend. He actually married her.

Yes,but she has to be 62 or older, and will only draw on his if his is more than hers. If he dies, and she is 60 or over and not married, she can draw his full social security. I would not worry so much about this, the SS laws will change again before she is old enough to think about it,if we still have SS.

yep 10 years. But she can only get it when SHE turns 65. Before that ONLY if he dies, or/and if they have children (if he becomes diabled) But only till the youngest turns 16, then she gets cutt off. not before. OR if the money that she made is more than his.
And even this is based on how many work cerdits he has. She may get half of hardly nothing.
The good thing is this if you marry him, she only get HALF of half and you the other.
your b/f played himself, he should have divorced her.

I heard that same comment from somebody recently. You need to get in touch with the Social Security Office in your city.
