My step dad served two tours in Vietnam. He still won't talk about it. I don't care what your stance on the "rightness" of a war is, or your political background. When you have the opportunity to talk to someone who has sacrificed for this country....shake their hand and say "thank you."

I think that the vast majority of our veterans are heros. However, there are those that have deserted, and a few that have taken public anti-American positions during war. Some have joined the military for a way out of there current circumstances, others do it for all the right reasons. In my Air Force and Navy career I encountered all breeds, but the vast majority was dedicated to there country.

Veterans are the reason we can all say what we think on Yahoo today. They went through hell and great sacrifice for all of us.

War sucks but it is unfortunately a part of humanity. I wish there would never be any more wars but that will never happen.

Given that reality, we can't thank our veterans enough for putting themselves in front of the fire for all of us.

For what it's worh, I'm Canadian. I have as much pride in our military and veterans as Americans do for theirs. I know our military isn't as large or as strong (or as well funded) as the American military. We appreciate what they do and have done.

I had a small role in the Vietnam War having taken a truck load of 750 pd bombs to the flight line in Korat Thailand back in 1965. I had other such duties like making Niapam and so on, but these thing were not really the most important things I did in Thailand about the War.
Before Thailand, I spent 18 monthes in Okinawa. I worked with and partied with Okinawan's during that 18 monthes and got to know them as a people. They were tough, smart, funny, brave and very human. They were different but not less than. They were good to us American's in general.
When I got to Thailand, I knew that the American eye would not see the people of South East Asia as they were actually. The men I worked with in Korat dressed and looked like scarecrows, but they weren't scarecrows. They were tough, smart, funny, brave and very human. I knew we were in the wrong place doing the wrong thing in 1965. But no one listened and we were their until 1975, 60000 KIA's, dead American Troops, later.

I'm a viet nam vet and honestly joined to 1/2 get out of town and find some adventure and 1/2 because I wanted to do something good for my country. Those who didn't go are O.K. in my mind because it was a goofy, wierd mess. I'm only angry at the phonies like Bill O'reilly and Limbaugh . O'reilly tried to say His "unit "was under fire and a caller named him as the liar that he is...he was on a camera crew watching the little Faulkland Isand war. and Limbaugh got out of going because of some kind of Butt-zit acne. His father had it and went to war...he was a soldier at normandy...I / we hate chicken hawks like Cheney
