The conference thought it was slick by having a logo where the number of 11 is seen within BIG 10 Conference. Speculation was when PennState joined that Northwestern would be out. That didn't happen and the conference will continue as is for years to come wih 11 teams.

The problem is that for 40 years the conference had been known as the Big Ten when Michigan State joined in 1950. Thus when the Big Ten invited independent Penn State to join the conference in 1990 after voting to expand to 11 teams, the Big Ten decided the conference should continue to be named that way and just modify the logo to include a hidden 11 in it.

Part of it is tradition, part of it is branding. Also, Delaney's been wanting to add a 12th team to the conference for years now. If they were to change the name to Big Eleven, it would sound weird and people would complain about the name change, then when the 12th team is added they'd have to change it again. And they couldn't call the conference the Big Twelve because there's another conference with that name already.

What would you prefer? The Big Plains? Big Midwest? Big North? Or maybe something like the Midwestern Eleven?
Maybe they should try to recruit Notre Dame into the Big Ten, so they can organize into two divisions, get a championship game, and actually have a system where you have a legitimate football conference schedule.
I'm just spouting off the first things that come to mind right now. Honestly, I don't think they can come up with a better name than Big Ten, so that's what it will stay.

They should ditch Penn State. Since they've been included they've had trouble recruiting talent like they used to. But then again, that may have something to do with the 80 year old coach.

pretty much so. of course for awhile there was only ten teams. it would be strange calling it the big eleven. I do not see them changing it.
