YES! If you are caught with a stolen gun, it is an automatic felony under both Federal and State Laws. The penalty for which is 5 years in prison. Though you will more likely end up with about 30 day in jail, the felony conviction and a year or two of probation.
As to not being licensed or registered that is up to your state and municipality. In New York City, possession of an unlicensed handgun has been known to result in up to life in prison.
My advice, knowing it stolen, get rid of it.. Dismantle it bury it in your yard and fill the hole with concrete mixed with rock salt. The gun might have been used in a murders for instance. In which case, guess what? They just might convict you on an unsolved murder by evidence of possession of the murder weapon. Brobably not enough to get you a lethal injection, but enough to give you a 4X7 for quite a number of years.
Far as using it for protection Good way to be noticed and convicted of the prior mentioned.
On gun purchases from private parties, I always call NCIC and read off the serial number. In about 30 seconds they let me know if stolen or identified with a crime. I collected 4 handguns this way and held the sellers for police with my own legal and loaded pistols. Three of them were crying and pleading for me to let them go, keep the gun and offered wallet contents. They still awaited police and their wrist jewelry. The one that didn't cry? He was a convicted murder already. He knew he was simply returning home to the Maximum Security of Arizona State Penetentary in Florence

Simple "Sensible Guy", buy a shotgun. I'm going to explain the shot gun spray an large amount of little pellets into the air, so if you aim and shoot at the door direction for sure you will take the enemy and the door and the stoppers with the trim and part of the wall. A pistol is much harder and slower. Have the training is guns and apply with your state police to have a license to have a gun at your home. Train as much as possible at least until you get good at it and once and while to keep practicing. Now if you are really sensible than the best way to go will be a pepper spray or tasser. Now peppers sprays have pepper and Tear gas and dark light matter combine into one product that make easy to identify by the police, it will be the best solution for you.

If you are a convicted felon, yes you will go to jail (Federal) for pocession of weapon and stolen property. Did you know it was stolen? The gun will be taken away from you and depending on the state laws and circumstances of the crime, you may or may not get jail time.

There's a reason we have gun laws. Yes, you'll go to prison for the weapons charge. Even when you're lawfully carrying a gun, self-defense is a sensitive issue and you can still be charged.

Contrary to opinions expressed here, you go to prison only if convicted and you're only convicted for what can be proven. Unless law enforcement has evidence you knowingly obtained the firearm illegally they'll just confiscate it and return it to the rightful owner or (more likely) destroy it.
