I'm not sure what you mean when you say "I put those in iPhoto". Do you mean you put them in home> Pictures >iPhoto Library? This is where iPhoto would put them if you use iPhoto to import images directly from a camera or flash disk. By the way, iPhoto likes to do all the placing of photo files and it keeps track of them based on it's own database file so don't move them once iPhoto catalogs them or iPhoto will loose track of them. You can put video files in home> Movies. For that matter, you can put them anywhere you like outside of the System and Library folders. Whatever application you use for editing movies (such as iMovie) can find them no matter where they are, as long as that drive is either your main internal drive or is always connected when you want to watch the videos.

BTW, Apple calls them "movies" for the same reason we say "Let's go see a movie" at a movie theater. It's just the way we talk about things that are not geeky and Apple doesn't think most people like to get all geeky about their computer stuff.

I don't keep my video and photo files in these places because I have a different drive volume for them. That way if the OS X system gets messed up or that drive volume needs to be erased, I don't worry about my video and photo files getting erased. The most precious files need a second copy on another drive as well. You can't be too careful with computer files.
