Your initial question of "what do you hope to get out of a trip," really all depends on the individual.
In terms of the second question of whether or not "you want to feel more mature, and tolerant of others, non prejudice," I think would also depend...again, on the individual. As for myself, I just got back from two months of backpacking in SE Asia and a year in East Asia. Though wanting to feel more mature, tolerant of others, and non prejudice were never really considered goals for myself, I'd have to say they were fortunately positive side effects that are now ingredients that make me...me. I know I know I know, I haven't answered your question of what I'd hope to get out of a trip. What I wanted to get out of my travels was a broader view of the world and perhaps a sense of adventure. I'm sure you've been told this a million times, but there's a lot of truth when someone says that there are some things that just can't be fully understood from an objective point of view (eg. reading a book about Vietnam), in comparison to actually experiencing Vietnam with all you senses. All in all, traveling is good. Unfortunately, not that many Americans travel. Check out the sight below.

Yes, you've said that. I would want to be more mature and more tolerant. Experience on life would be a deffinite I would gain after the journey.

You should not need a trip to grow up but if that is what it takes so be it. It is easy for us to see the other persons problems but hard to see our own. We need to take a hard look in the mirror everyday and say is this the person I want to be.

I want to have a sense of how the people are there, what their life is like and learn more about their culture. I think the more you understand people, the more you can accept their beliefs as another way of living.
