I worked it out as a long division problem....getting y - 5 for the answer, pretty basic, but how do I do it a second way? In fraction form?? How? Help!!

(y + 7) (y - 5)

(y + 7)

The (y +7)s cancel, leaving with y-5.

y^2+2y-35
--------------- (that's a fraction line)
y+7
....then simplify...
y^2+y-35
--------------
7
