I asked a question a little while ago on the Religion and Spirituality section of Y!A and got some every interesting answers.

The most interesting of the answers involved people who attack with malice and even hate others just 'expressing themselves' and another stated that it happens everywhere. Why is it that hatred is accepted as normal, and unfortunately even encouraged is particular fields like religion, in our society?

What is the purpose of hatred and why is hatred based on religion or cultural difference all but accepted?

Please explain your answers.

Thanks.

The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Hatred stems from a person or group that cares about something enough to HATE anyone different. Indifference comes from apathy. Hate is not apathetic. In this sense, it is similar to love. But hate and love are very different. To love is to care enough to wish for affection, and sympathy and protection for those you care for. To hate is to care enough to wish malice and mal-intent on others. Indifferent people don't care

At the purest level, the purpose of hatred is self-preservation and is based in fear. Almost everything has roots in fear.

Islam is an example of a religion that fosters hatred. For example, many Muslims hate Jews just because they control markets.

Hatred is accepted in religion because people are raised in a culture that they call true. If someone might threaten what they call true, hatred insues.

There is hatred because we are told that we must love. This creates a thought conflict and usually expresses itself through violence.
Why MUST we love anyone? It is the MUST that forces a problem. You are told to from youth and then the idea of 'your soul' is held hostage by religion if you don't LOVE one another.
Force exerted in any direction of duality causes the opposite to swing. If you cling to someone so hard that they are smothered and in a panic run from you. What will you feel? Disappointment that it didn't turn out like your fantasy, fear that you will not find this situation again, anger at the rejection and eventually when these have worked your thinking mechanism into a frenzy, hatred for that person.
If you are told that you MUST love a person that you 'think' you can not relate to based on culture. You will build resentment, fear and anger.

None of it is real. All of it is imagined. The 'you' involved in the whole thing is a fabrication of memory. Love and Hate are only mind games human beings have learned to play. None of it is necessary.

Hatred is natural. It IS normal, you can see hatred every day. Hatred is a very motivational force. For example the common phrase "unite against a common enemy" or rather enemies allying to defeat a common enemy. It unites people in purpose. Hatred spawns for the desire for others to change and ignorance. Some people can't handle differences... Yin cannot exist without yang.

Also hatred can help overcome certain mental barriors. Your morals may say "do not kill" but with hatred the moral is forgotten or you allow exception, this can aid survival (to eat, or someone attacks). Also it can quicken reflexes and blur your mind, providing you to attack without hesitiation making it more powerful.

ok. I think I know a lot about hatred but I don't. I think this site here does a better job of explaining. =)

In a nutshell though, hate is the permission to destroy the enemy.

Without hate, how would you know Love? They are more dependent upon each other, that they are opposite. People usually miss that the Hatred has arisen "inside" of them. To avoid the pain of self-hate, they project it upon others, in an attempt to get rid of it. But, What you give "IS" what you receive........ Peace and Blessings.....
